"Now, you know that you have heard God's voice before, telling you that you need to tithe..."

thrown into a message today about Jonah.

I've been reading Women Who Run With Wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, a cantadora(story teller). She tells stories, myths, tales and then explains what they mean to us as women.

Jonah makes a good story, but, listening to him preach on it today I had to wonder how in the world I ever made myself believe it literally.

I pretty much wanted to scream when he threw in the above statement about tithing.

I really hate it that men take people's love of or or more likely people's fear of God and manipulate them with it to get what they want - like money or obedience or well, whatever...

and, so, you are wondering why I bother to go to church at all if all I'm going to do is complain about it.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing.

I just watched the documentary "Jesus Camp". It reminded me so much of my adventures in churchland. It was scary! How they got me to believe all that I believed is a mystery. One of my most specific memories is of one of the leaders from Shawnee talking about how we needed to give more if we wanted to receive. He went on and on talking about all that God had given him, a big house, nice new furniture at a price he could afford, a fancy new car. I remember thinking that my mom's tithes probably paid for all that. Meanwhile, we could barely afford to pay the bills and have food on the table. This isn't to say that we were never helped during that time. So many people gave to us when we were in need, those people were truth. The others just wanted to take.

Oh I love that book, I have been reading it for about 5 years I think. Nibble a bit, and then go back to it. Full full full.

Funny...can't recall ever hearing God's voice tell me to tithe.

I distinctly remember hearing a lot of MEN telling me to tithe, though!
