I used to wonder why my Mom would sit in her house, alone, with no television, no radio, no noise whatsoever. I understand now. After raising four children over a span of thirty-seven years and still going, I understand. We have four televisions in our house, at any given time at least two of them are on, sometimes three (the one in my room is hardly ever on)and they all have their own receivers so they can be playing three different channels. If it is not the television at least one computer of the two that are in the house or maybe one of the many gaming systems.. sometimes I feel like my head is going to explode. I am just too old for this.
I come to the office where it is quiet and I am alone.
I treasure moments when my house is quiet and still.
I get it now, June.

Yeah...I get it, too. I'm just the same...not to mention all the other stuff that's making background noise>the frig, the furnace, traffic, the wind...things we don't really even notice. Enough to make you crazy. Good thing you can escape. Jeanne
I find that the older I get the less tolerant of noise I am. Particularly if I need to concentrate.
Work is especially difficult. I end up playing my ipod on earphones with soothing music, and then I can think without distraction. But I seem to need more 'white noise' now than ever before.
